Municipal Profile

The Mayor, Trustees and Village Clerk are elected positions. Each term of office is for four years. Trustees' elections are held every two years with three Trustee positions expiring.

The Mayor appoints the Treasurer, the Village Manager and all Department Heads. The term of the Treasurer, Police Chief and Village Manager can not exceed the term of the Mayor. All other appointments do not have an expiration time. The Village has paid police force and volunteer fire force.

The Village Manager is head of the administrative branch of Sauk Village government. He or she is responsible for efficient administration of all Village Departments. The Manager shall have and shall exercise all powers and duties assigned to him or her by Ordinance 85-5 and such other authority as may be granted by the Board of Trustees. The Manager shall attend all meetings of the Board of Trustees with the right to take part in the discussion, but with no right to vote.

The Village Manager shall appoint, suspend or remove all employees below department head level subject to the authority of the Fire and Police Commission of the Village, and all appointive offices shall be filled by the Manager's appointment, except where otherwise provided by law. The Manager shall examine all contracts and proposed contracts. The Manager, as the Village's official budget officer, shall be responsible for the preparation of the Village's annual budget.

The duties of the Village Clerk are outlined in the Illinois Revised Statutes, Chapter 24, and Section 3-10-7. The Village Clerk is elected for a 4-year period. The Village Clerk serves as Deputy Voter Registrar for Cook County.

The Village Clerk maintains the official records of the Village and proceedings of the Board of Trustees. All permanent records are filed with the Clerk, who is responsible for seeing that they are recorded and/or published in accordance with law. Comprehensive indexes for all records are maintained. Village sticker sales are through the Clerk's office.
