Life Safety News

As we enter the spring and summer storm seasons, the SVFD would like to remind citizens to stay vigilant and safe. Sauk Village’s public safety services are committed to maintaining preparedness for any event caused by severe weather. As part of that commitment, the Village utilizes a warning siren system to notify residents of hazardous weather conditions that have the potential to cause injury, loss of life, or destruction of property. Here are some things you should know about the activation of the Village’s warning siren system during severe weather:

Tornado Watch vs Warning

Tornado Watch: The National Weather Service (NWS) issues a watch when weather conditions are favorable for the development of tornadoes in or close to the watch area. The Village of Sauk Village does not activate its warning sirens after a tornado watch has been issued. Residents should stay informed by keeping track of weather updates from reliable sources such as local news stations and weather apps or by tuning into the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio.

Tornado Warning: The NWS issues a warning when a tornado has been sighted or indicated by weather Doppler radar.  A tornado warning that has been issued for the surrounding area means you should take shelter immediately. In the event a tornado warning has been issued, the Village will activate its warning sirens under the following conditions:

    • Sirens will be activated if a tornado is tracking toward Sauk Village within a 20-minute range or if conditions are believed to pose an imminent threat.
    • If the tornado continues to track toward Sauk Village, sirens will be activated a second time if a tornado is within a 10-minute range.
    • Finally, the sirens will be activated a third time if a tornado is within a 5-minute range.

What should you expect to hear? During a tornado warning activation, the siren tone is steady, lasting approximately three minutes.

It is important to remember that advanced warning can play a vital role in saving lives, minimizing damage, and enhancing the overall resilience of our community in the face of severe weather events like tornadoes. For more tornado safety information, visit the NWS.
